CHANDIGARH: Haryana additional advocate genera Naveen Kaushik, who had allegedly helped the accused facing charges for the death of 16-year-old Junaid Khan, resigned from his post on Wednesday. "Kaushik has submitted his resignation and explanation on the issue. His resignation has been forwarded to the state government for acceptance," Haryana advocate general (AG) B R Mahajan told media.

Junaid was stabbed to death in June this year on board a Mathura-  bound train after an argument over seat. The incident had turned into religious slurs and triggered a mob attack on deceased's brother and two cousins had taken place between Okhla and Asoti in Haryana near Delhi.

Kaushik was reportedly seen helping Naresh Kumar, the key accused in Junaid lynching case, at district court in Faridabad where the trial is pending. In an interim order passed on October 25, Faridabad additional sessions judge Y S Rathore had stated that Kaushik was assisting the counsel of main accused Naresh during cross-examination of prosecution witnesses.

"It will send a wrong signal and will also create a feeling of insecurity amongst the victim party besides adversely affecting the aim of the court to conduct free and fair trial," the judge had observed, terming the case sensitive and the government lawyer's actions as professional misconduct.

In his explanation, Kaushik, however, stated that there was apparently some misconception in the case because he had met the defence lawyer for some other purpose and never intended to influence the proceedings.
