Indian Railways to begin passenger train services! In a big relief for people across the country, Indian Railways has decided to partially resume passenger train services from May 12. The bookings for special trains that will travel to major stations, with selective stoppages, will start from 4 PM onwards on May 11. To begin with, the national transporter will start passenger train operations with 15 pairs of trains, which means 30 journeys including the return trips. A railway ministry official told Financial Express Online that to begin with, the passenger trains will have only AC coaches, and the fare structure will be similar to that of Rajdhani Express trains.

According to Indian Railways, these trains will run from the New Delhi railway station to the following destinations:

Dibrugarh

Agartala

Howrah

Patna

Bilaspur

Ranchi

Bhubaneswar

Secunderabad

Bengaluru

Chennai

Thiruvananthapuram

Madgaon

Mumbai Central

Ahmedabad

Jammu Tavi

Passengers wishing to travel on these special trains will be able to book tickets only on the IRCTC website (https://www.irctc.co.in/). The national transporter has also said that ticket booking counters at all railway stations will remain closed

No counter tickets, including platform tickets, will be up for sale at the railway stations. All passengers on these 15 pairs of special services trains will have to wear face cover/mask and will be mandated to undergo screening at the time of departure. Only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to travel on the trains.

Indian Railways aims to start more special train services with reserved tickets for passengers. This will be done after reserving 20,000 coaches as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients and taking into account the possible requirement of 300 special Shramik special trains for stranded migrants on a daily basis.
Indian Railways had suspended all passenger train operations during the ongoing nationwide lockdown. While the nationwide lockdown is till May 17, the national transporter has taken the important decision to partially resume passenger train operations 5 days ahead of that.
