Ex-Punjab Police chief Dinkar Gupta is NIA Director-General

New Delhi - Punjab-cadre IPS officer Dinkar Gupta has been appointed Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He is from the 1987 batch.

An order by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) read: “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Gupta’s appointment as the Director-General, NIA, till March 31, 2024, that is the date of his retirement, or till further orders, whichever takes place earlier.” Gupta takes over as the NIA chief more than a year after YC Modi retired in May 2021 and Director-General of the CRPF, Kuldiep Singh, was given the additional charge of the agency.

Gupta was appointed Director-General of the Punjab Police in 2019. He served in the post for two years and seven months. He was later shifted as Chairman, Punjab Police Housing Board, as he had sought permission for a central deputation. He has also held the post of Director-General of Police (Intelligence) in Punjab, which entailed a direct supervision of the state’s Intelligence Wing, Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU).

In another order, the DoPT said the government had appointed Swagar Das Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) till November 30, 2024. Also a 1987-batch IPS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, he is currently Special Director, Intelligence Bureau.
