CHICAGO - 50,000 athletes took over the streets of downtown Chicago for the 46th Chicago Marathon on 13 Oct 2024. These included world-record breakers and many other runners who completed the intense journey at their own pace.
Runners converged on Chicago from all 50 states and more than 100 countries to place Chicago on the international stage again.
The course led runners on a tour of the city, weaving through 29 different neighborhoods.
While the pros were finishing the marathon in just over two hours, some resilient runners spent nearly 12 hours on the race course before crossing the finish line. Runners who crossed the finish line after 6 p.m. would still get a medal.
Kenyan runner Ms Ruth Chepngetich shattered the women's marathon world record clocking 2:09:56 slashing almost 2 minutes off the previous world record. Chepngetich placed 10th overall, with only nine men running faster.
Kenyan Mr John Korir, 27, won the men’s race, coming in at 2:02:43, the second-fastest time ever run in Chicago.
