CBI nabs SI taking Rs 2 lakh bribe from property dealer in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a Sub-Inspector (SI), posted at the Sector 31 police station, for allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh in bribe. The CBI had laid a trap and caught the accused, SI Mohan Singh, accepting the money red-handed in the market.

The complainant Prem Singh Bisht, a local property dealer, and alleged that the officer had demanded Rs 9 lakh in bribe to remove the names of three of his employees in a case of attempt to murder case registered against them on September 17 at the Sector 31 Police Station. Six others had been also been booked.

He claimed that since the case was registered, a police team had been visiting his premises several times and again to harass him on the pretext of arresting his employees. A deal was then struck at Rs 9 lakh to favour his employees during investigation and avoid his harassment, Bisht claimed.

Sources said that SI was arrested when the ‘advance amount’ of Rs 2 lakh was being paid to him. Soon after the arrest of sub-inspector Mohan, the Chandigarh police department transferred Sector-31 SHO Jaswinder Kaur to the police lines and handed over additional charge to SHO 34 Ajay Kumar.

“I have nothing to do with any kind graft case,” she told HT and till the filing of the report, the CBI team was questioning her.

On the night of September 16, the police had booked nine people for rioting and attempt to murder for attacking a Ram Darbar resident with sharp-edged weapons owing to old rivalry. Ravi Kumar alias Anda (27) of phase 1 Ram Darbar, employed on contract with the UT health department was the complaint.

Sources said that SI was arrested when the ‘advance amount’ of Rs 2 lakh was being paid to him.

Of the nine accused named in the FIR --- Jospesh who is into finance business in Manimajra. Anil of Ram Darbar and Deepa alias Soor of Ram Darbar Phase 2, were employees of Bisht the complainant in the graft case against Mohan. It was for removing their names from the FIR the accused was demanding bribe of Rs 9 lakh. The police had registered a case under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and various Sections of Arms Act at the Sector 31 police station, Chandigarh.
